Reaction Time

Quick test

Mouse, finger, or the space bar.

How the test works

The box turns red, then green after a random wait of 1.5 to 4 seconds. Tap the moment it turns green. You get five rounds, and your score is the average. Tapping before green doesn't count against you: that round just starts again.

What the score means

Your score is the time between green appearing on the screen and your tap reaching the page. So it's your eyes, your brain and your hand, plus your device:

  • A 60 Hz screen only redraws every 16.7 ms, so green can appear up to that much later than the page asked for it.
  • Touch screens, wireless mice and Bluetooth keyboards each add their own delay.
  • So the same person can score differently on two devices. Compare scores made on the same one.

The labels are simple bands: under 250 ms is quick, 250 to 400 ms is steady to relaxed, and over 400 ms usually means a slow start or a distraction.

How to get faster

  • Rest your finger on the screen or button before green, so it only has to press, not travel.
  • Look at the middle of the box, not at your finger.
  • Don't try to guess the timing. The wait is random, and guesses mostly end up as "Too soon!".
  • Being tired, distracted or cold makes everyone slower. Try it again after a break.
