About Turtle Code

Turtle Code is a free programming puzzle that needs no typing. You line up command blocks and press Run. A turtle follows them one by one to reach the star. If it bumps into a rock, the program was wrong. Then you find the step that broke it.

How to play

  1. Tap MOVE, TURN L or TURN R to add a block to your program.
  2. Tap a block to take it out again.
  3. Press Run and watch the turtle follow your blocks in order.
  4. If it crashes, fix the step that went wrong and run again.
  5. Reach the star using as few blocks as you can.

What it practises

A program is a list of exact steps. The computer never guesses what you meant. This game practises planning a route before you act and spotting the one bad step. Stars reward the shortest program, which is a first taste of efficient code.

Questions

How do you learn coding without typing?
Block games like this one teach the same idea as real code. Instructions run in order, exactly as written. Turtle Code has 25 levels, from three blocks to a 10 by 10 grid.
How do you get three stars in Turtle Code?
Use the fewest blocks that reach the star. Two stars mean you used at most two extra blocks. Any other win gets one star.
Can I use Turtle Code in a computing lesson?
Yes. It is free and runs in the browser. There is no sign-up and nothing to install. It works on phones and laptops, so students can start at once.
