About Signal or Noise
Signal or Noise shows you six headlines, each with the chart behind it. You decide if the data really backs the claim, or if there's a catch. After each answer the chart shows you the catch. A new round comes every day.
How to play
- Read the headline, then look closely at the chart.
- Check where the axis starts, which dates are shown, and how much data there is.
- Pick a verdict from three choices, like Real signal, Axis trick or Cherry-picked window.
- See the answer. The chart shows you the catch, or the proof.
- After six claims, you get a score and a star rating.
What it practises
It practises reading charts with care. You'll meet stretched axes, short time windows, tiny samples and hidden causes. These tricks appear in real news and ads, so spotting them is a useful habit.
Questions
- Is there a new Signal or Noise round every day?
- Yes. The daily round is the same for everyone, and you get one try. Practice rounds are unlimited.
- How is Signal or Noise scored?
- Easy claims give 1 point, medium ones give 2, and hard ones give 3. A full round has two of each, so the top score is 12.
- Is every chart misleading?
- No. Some claims really are backed by the data. If you call everything a trick, you'll get those wrong.
